One Writer's Game with Endless Numbers -- a GRCC math seminar, 4/19/2023
Presented by Rachel Carpenter
Abstract (published in posters to advertise):
This talk will explore a combination of topics that bridge the disciplines of math and writing. We'll discuss the use of mathematics in literature, association/juxtaposition in the lyric essay, and one of the most famous unsolved problems in mathematics – the Collatz conjecture. We will also look at several examples of mathematical analogy in literature, including sections from my own lyric essay “Scales and Games with Endless Numbers,” which uses the Collatz conjecture as a structure for a discussion about chronic pain.
